If you’re wondering how I’m doing this from Los Angeles and Seattle, go back and read my kickoff report. If not, lets get into what I’m seeing:
- A Quiet Place with Jim Halpert and Emily from the Devil Wears Prada
- Elon Musk uses Westworld panel as a platform for launching himself into space
- Facebook Live – remembering Meerkat, Periscope and every other streaming service to launch at SXSW
- Westworld sneak peak of Samurai World
A Quiet Place
BIG TUNA. Yes our very own Jim Halpert is one of the top trending people for the premier of A Quiet Place, a movie he directed about Aliens that only attack if you make a sound. I saw the trailer yesterday and it looks scary AF. If you missed it (and let’s be real, you probably did) you can catch it in theaters April 6th. Good job Jimothy.
So Elon crashed a panel (read: SX wanted him but couldn’t confirm it till probably last week) and talked about space travel alongside the creators of Westworld. Peak SX moment.
What I’m seeing a lot of is speakers and attendees using Facebook live to share their experiences. This isn’t new for Facebook but given SX’s history it’s kinda cool? SX only live streams really popular sessions and if you want your session recorded (forget live stream) you have to shell some dough for licensing and a video crew. In the past, services like Meerkat and Periscope have been the go to for people looking to share in real time their sessions. But nothing has surfaced this year. No new startup looking to make a name for itself. Seems like Facebook has set the gold standard for live streams for now…
Look, I’m just as tired of writing about this as you are about reading it but the fact is, James Marsden is the number 1 trending person right now and people love Westworld. One could argue that Elon’s panel crash boosted this as a trending topic, but honestly I think Elon used Westworld to push his space exploration agenda. In their panel, they confirmed Samurai World, which we saw a sneak peak of in the season finale but now we know.
In all honesty yesterday was pretty boring. I wanna see something cool that doesn’t involve TV or movies please.
